Intro
Time to research writing and improve on that front. This is a great skill to know and I always like to improve upon it as I march forward with my blog. I watched a video on writing skills. It had a few tips that made a whole lot of sense to me. Some of those tips were reading more widely, finding a writing ritual, and being in a writing state vs an editing state. All of these are things that I can start implementing into my own writing today.
Reading wider
I’ve always heard steal like an artist. This comes from the fact that when painting something or creating something you will always take a bunch of inspiration from other artists or creators in your medium. This is true for writing also. Where can you steal if you aren’t well-read? That's why it’s important to read more books to get the inspiration you need from other great writers to improve your own writing.
Having a writing ritual
Thomas Frank talks about having a writing ritual and how he had his own space to write away from everything. He also set a minimum goal for himself while in this space. With all of this, it helped him gain momentum while writing and he would often write more than he set out to write. During this time it is easier to get your thoughts on the page and really focus.
Writing vs Editing Mindset
Going along with momentum it is also a great thing to keep in mind what mindset you are in while writing. When you are writing and you keep changing your words or editing what you have just written you won’t get anywhere. You need to keep one mindset while writing and that is to write. Once you are done you can come back and re-read. Just like Thomas Franks said it’s easier to edit something on the page rather than a blank page.
Conclusion
There are a bunch of tips and things to keep in mind while writing. Some things that are great to remember are staying in the right mindset, finding a writing ritual, and reading everything in sight. As long as you practice and find good ways to keep those things in mind you’ll have a great foundation and a lot of tools in your writing kit.
